How this was measured

"Precise" here means that every number traces to its evidence and carries an honest tolerance. Nothing is drawn as more exact than its source.

Sources, best first

Four layers
  1. Measured: the room sizes written on the National Monuments Record card by H. J. Thomas after his visit of 26 April 1974 (hall 15 ft 11 in by 15 ft 3 in; passage 5 ft by 15 ft 3 in; kitchen 16 ft 1 in by 15 ft 6 in; beams about 11 in square; wing about 22 ft by 29 ft). Converted at 0.3048 m per foot. Tolerance ±0.02 m.
  2. Scaled: the outline of the house, its wing and stair compartment, read off a copy of the fair-drawn 1:100 plan NA/GL/89/208. The copy was calibrated from the two stated room lengths. Tolerance ±0.3 m (±0.4 m for the wing). The farm ranges were traced from the OS 25-inch map of about 1900 (1:2500): ±1 m on their sizes, about ±3 m on position.
  3. Inferred: what no record states: wall heights, roof pitch, door and window positions, fireplace widths, the wing's inner walls. Each is set from period practice and the Cadw photographs of 29 July 1988, and drawn dashed.
  4. Gap: what cannot yet be drawn: the first floor and roof trusses (not examined in 1974), the 19th-century east extension, the yard and boundary walls.

Checks

Does it hold together?
  • The wall thickness implied by the plan, (6.25 − 4.648) ÷ 2 = 0.801 m, matches the "fairly thick walls" on the card.
  • The three rooms and two partitions leave 1.486 m for each gable with its chimney breast: in line with the end-chimney plan recorded in NA/GL/88/49.
  • With its stair compartment the wing runs 9.24 m east to west on the plan, within 0.4 m of the 29 ft written on the card.
  • The plan, placed on the 25-inch map, matched the hatched house there to within about 1 m.
