The short answer

What actually moves AI and local visibility (the useful part)

Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors (Darren Shaw, published 6 Nov 2025) is an expert survey: opinion, not a controlled test. It ranks the AI search visibility factors as: 1. Presence on expert-curated "best of" and similar lists (score 179) 2. A dedicated page for each service (170) 3. Prominence on key industry-relevant domains (167) 4. Quality/authority of unstructured citations: newspaper articles, blog posts, gov sites, industry associations (160) 5. Authority of third-party sites where reviews appear (156) 6. Geographic keyword relevance of content (153); 7. Quantity of unstructured citations (147) Shaw's summary: "3 of the top 5 AI Search visibility factors are citation factors. In AI SEO, mentions (citations) are the new link." A practitioner (TSEG, May 2025) adds that ChatGPT's local answers come from Bing's web index (top 20-30 results), not from Bing Places or Google profiles. On that account, a structured listing ChatGPT never sees matters less than being named on credible public pages.

So for an online-only heritage publisher, "directories" means unstructured mentions on trusted local and heritage domains, not NAP listings.

How to do it

  1. Do not open chamber, Bing Places or NAP-directory accounts. Record "checked, no" so later runs stop re-seeding it.
  2. Build the "best of" route instead. List the curated lists that already exist for the area: "things to do in Penarth/Llandough", local-history society link pages, library local-studies resource lists, heritage trail pages. Note which ones name similar sites. Getting added is a request, so it is a HubSpot draft on GO.
  3. Make each topic its own page (factor 2): one page per walk, per record set, per e-book. Cedwyn already has this shape; check that each page states the place names (Llandough, Leckwith, Cogan, Penarth, River Ely) in text (factor 6).
  4. Track unstructured mentions: a monthly search for "cedwyn.bucklerfamily.estate" and "Great House Farm" Llandough, logged with source domain and date. Bing Webmaster AI Performance (see bing-webmaster-ai-performance-copilot-citations.md) shows whether Copilot cites us.

How we apply it to Cedwyn
