# Chambers of commerce, free business directories and Bing Places for an online heritage publisher — GATE (mostly NO)

Date: 2026-10-31 · harvest run · status: decision note; nothing created, no accounts, nobody contacted.

## The short answer
- **Chamber of commerce: NO (paid).** Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid covers Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Its membership page offers "a choice of membership packages", with prices only on request ([address kept in the project workspace]). It has no free tier, so the never-pay rule rules it out. Benefits listed are networking, member marketing channels, training and trade help. None of these is a reader channel for a local-history e-book.
- **Bing Places: NO for now (same reason as Google).** Bing Places is free (Bing blog, 3 Oct 2025: rebuilt and moved to bing.com, one-step import from Google). Third-party guides state that virtual offices and mailing addresses are not eligible. Bing's own data-quality guidelines carry a "Businesses without physical store" heading (seen in a search preview; the page is script-rendered and was not read). google-maps-gbp-demolished-heritage-site.md already ruled Cedwyn ineligible for a Google Business Profile: online-only, with a demolished site. Bing Places would also mean a new account. Revisit only if real in-person walks start (a service-area listing).
- **Generic UK citation directories (Yell, Cylex, Scoot etc.): NO.** They are NAP listings for trades. BrightLocal's only UK directory audience comparison is from 2009/10, so no current numbers support them. Low value, and each one needs a new account.

## What actually moves AI and local visibility (the useful part)
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors (Darren Shaw, published 6 Nov 2025) is an expert survey: opinion, not a controlled test. It ranks the **AI search visibility factors** as:
1. Presence on expert-curated "best of" and similar lists (score 179)
2. A dedicated page for each service (170)
3. Prominence on key industry-relevant domains (167)
4. Quality/authority of unstructured citations: newspaper articles, blog posts, gov sites, industry associations (160)
5. Authority of third-party sites where reviews appear (156)
6. Geographic keyword relevance of content (153); 7. Quantity of unstructured citations (147)
Shaw's summary: "3 of the top 5 AI Search visibility factors are citation factors. In AI SEO, mentions (citations) are the new link." A practitioner (TSEG, May 2025) adds that ChatGPT's local answers come from Bing's web index (top 20-30 results), not from Bing Places or Google profiles. On that account, a structured listing ChatGPT never sees matters less than being named on credible public pages.

So for an online-only heritage publisher, "directories" means unstructured mentions on trusted local and heritage domains, not NAP listings.

## How to do it
1. Do not open chamber, Bing Places or NAP-directory accounts. Record "checked, no" so later runs stop re-seeding it.
2. Build the "best of" route instead. List the curated lists that already exist for the area: "things to do in Penarth/Llandough", local-history society link pages, library local-studies resource lists, heritage trail pages. Note which ones name similar sites. Getting added is a request, so it is a HubSpot draft on GO.
3. Make each topic its own page (factor 2): one page per walk, per record set, per e-book. Cedwyn already has this shape; check that each page states the place names (Llandough, Leckwith, Cogan, Penarth, River Ely) in text (factor 6).
4. Track unstructured mentions: a monthly search for "cedwyn.bucklerfamily.estate" and "Great House Farm" Llandough, logged with source domain and date. Bing Webmaster AI Performance (see bing-webmaster-ai-performance-copilot-citations.md) shows whether Copilot cites us.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Decision now: no Chambers Wales membership (paid), no Bing Places or GBP (ineligible, online-only, new account), no generic directories.
- Redirect the effort to curated-list inclusion and unstructured local mentions. Existing skills cover the individual doors: letters-to-the-editor-local-press-wales.md, visit-the-vale-council-tourism-free-event-promotion.md, parish-community-magazines-local-print-vale.md, business-wales-events-finder-free-listing-fit-gate.md.
- Re-open trigger: Cedwyn runs regular in-person guided walks with a real meeting point. Then re-check Google and Bing service-area eligibility together.
- Kill test for the curated-list route: under 2 inclusions after 10 GO'd requests in 3 months, so stop asking.
