Summary

A family member supplied a photograph of an inscription reading “John Williams” with “1886” beneath it, and asked for it to be catalogued as a comparator for the tenant signature “John Williams” on the 1939 Western Ground Rents tenancy agreement (EV-0023). Only the crop needed for that comparison is included; the object identity and location are not disclosed.

Interpretation

Visible form only: the inscription has an ornate capital J, wide letter spacing and an extended stroke over the final letters; the 1939 signature on EV-0023 is more compact, with tighter letter spacing and a compressed ending. These are surface observations of a photograph, not an authentication. A visible difference between a display inscription and a signature does not establish different writers, and this comparison cannot establish who signed the 1939 agreement. A proper handwriting examination would require originals, chain of custody and more exemplars.

What is not known: who wrote the inscription; when; whether the “1886” was written at the same time or by the same hand; whether the inscription and the 1939 signature relate to the same John Williams; the identity of the object. This entry records a comparator, not a conclusion.
