Glamorgan History Society: Autumn Day School bookstall, Morgannwg journal and the Clark Award
What it is (read on its own pages, 31 Oct 2026)
- Glamorgan History Society / Cymdeithas Hanes Morgannwg, charity 511498. Founded 1950 as the Glamorgan Local History Society, renamed 1966. Membership is "open to anyone with an interest in the history of Glamorgan". The old Membership page gives the fee as £15 a year (search snippet; the current fee was not read because the site rate-limited us). Renewal is due 1 January, by cheque.
- Morgannwg is the annual journal (every year since 1957). Each issue has long and short articles plus regular book reviews, archaeological notes and record-office news. Back issues from 1957 to 2004 are on Welsh Journals Online (NLW). Recent volumes cost £5 to £12.50 in the society shop. Officers: Chair Prof. John V. Tucker; Secretary Rhian Diggins; Joint Editor Kim Collis (the second editor post is vacant).
- Contributors page (snippet): long articles "preferably do not exceed 8,000 words", with longer ones accepted at the editor's discretion. A short-article word limit was not seen.
- Autumn Day School (the society calls it "the highlight of the calendar") runs every November. In 2026: Sat 7 Nov, Heronston Hotel, Bridgend CF35 5AW, theme "Glamorgan and America". We read the programme PDF: 10.00 tea and bookstalls; talks by Dr Hywel Davies (Samuel Jones, Pennepek), Prof. Angela V John (Philip Burton) and Paul Frame (Franklin's Glamorgan friends); at 12.45 the first George Thomas Clark Award for History; lunch and bookstalls again at 1.00. Fee £30 with lunch, £20 without. The booking form has a "Table for publications" tick box, so a publication table is booked on the ordinary attendee form. No booking deadline was printed in what we read.
- George Thomas Clark Award for History: announced 17 Sep 2026, "made annually", first presented at the 7 Nov 2026 Day School. Criteria, entry route and prize were not seen (rate-limited); check the page before planning on it.
Why it matters (numbers)
- One room, once a year, holds the county's most engaged history buyers, and lunch is spent at the bookstalls. Attendance numbers were not published (not checked).
- A Morgannwg book review is permanent: issues are archived and indexed (NLW holds 1957–2004 online), so a review keeps sending readers for decades. That makes it the county-journal equivalent of the history-magazine route already in
history-magazine-journal-articles-historian-history-today.md. - Clark himself (G. T. Clark, 1809–1898, ironmaster and antiquary, author of the Glamorgan Cartae and Limbus Patrum Morganiae, the county pedigrees) is the main printed source for Vale gentry lineages. Any Williams/Vaughan pedigree argument will meet his work, and the award carries his name.
How to do it
- Join first, pitch second. A £15 member gets the journal and is a peer at the Day School. The society does not take cold pitches from outsiders.
- Book review: send the reviews editor a review copy offer (a PDF plus a print proof if one exists) with a one-paragraph abstract and the sources list. Volumes appear once a year, so allow about 12 months.
- Short contribution: a sourced note under 8,000 words, no sales language, citing primary records (tithe, estate, rate books). This is the scholarly route and stands on its own merit; it is not a promotion.
- Clark Award: read the criteria page when it is reachable, and record the eligibility gate (members only? published work? year?) before writing anything.
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- 2026: too late, and an owner GO. The 7 Nov 2026 Day School is 7 days away. Attending or booking a table needs the project lead's GO and a cheque/booking by the project lead. Log it as a PROPOSAL only; we contact nobody.
- 2027 plan (watch from 1 Jun 2027 for the theme and the booking PDF): if the project lead states GO, join (£15, the project lead's own decision and payment, so it goes in the proposals queue), book a publications table, and hand out one A5 card: "Great House Farm, Llandough: the records" with a QR code to
/ebooks/plus UTM. - Morgannwg review: draft (HubSpot draft only) a review-copy offer to the editor for the reviews section, with sources first and no case advocacy, and follow the editorial rules (no banned words, nothing about family holdings). Only after the owner's GO.
- Content hook, free now: a neutral
/research/note, "Using G. T. Clark's Limbus Patrum for Llandough and Leckwith pedigrees", which cites Clark verbatim with page refs and marks inferences "our inference". It earns search traffic from people researching the award and Clark, and it is our own page. - Trap: Glamorgan Family History Society (journal deadlines already in
family-history-society-journals-forums.md) is a different charity. Don't mix the two up in drafts.
