# Genes Reunited in 2026: alive, but posting and messaging are paid (VERDICT: read-only only)

Checked 31 Oct 2026 (harvest run). Seed from the root: is Genes Reunited still active, and are its Hot Matches and message boards a read-only reader-discovery route for a Welsh family-history e-book?

## What it is now (read today)
- Findmypast-owned (footer "© Copyright 2026 Findmypast Limited"). The site still runs: help centre, subscriptions, record search, boards.
- **Boards are alive but quiet.** Wayback capture of /boards, 23 May 2026 (read): Find Ancestors 525,221 threads / 2,193,389 posts; General Chat 497,902 / 3,881,935; Genealogy Chat 83,875 / 647,132; Find Living Relatives 9,793 / 82,970; Success Stories 6,984 / 6,988; WDYTYA Live Requests 52 / 539.
- An undated search snippet of the legacy boards page shows General Chat at 498,094 / 3,890,832. That is 192 threads and 8,897 posts more than May, so people are still posting. We couldn't see the date of the snippet.
- **Find Ancestors page 1 (Wayback, 18 Jun 2026, read):** latest-post dates 18, 17, 17, 16, 14, 12, 11 and 7 Jun, then 29, 21, 20, 19, 19, 16, 13, 11 and 6 May 2026. That is about 17 active threads in 6 weeks on the main ancestor board: a trickle, nowhere near the 2000s volume.
- **Hot Matches (help FAQ, read):** it "randomly takes 50 names from your tree, excluding common names such as Smith and Jones", and matches name plus year and place of birth. "Super Hot Matches" also match the parents. The FAQ admits runs were stopped for performance and restarted, "they won't be run every 14 days". A board thread (1016828) complains that matches ignore place of birth.
  - **For us:** Williams is exactly the kind of very common name that matches badly, and Hot Matches needs our own member tree, which means an account.
- **The paywall (subscription page, Wayback 1 Mar 2026, read):** the Standard subscription (£1.67 a month on a 12-month plan, £4.95 for 1 month) is what buys "Send members messages via the Genes Reunited contact centre" and "Post on the community boards". Free registration gives a tree and search only. Platinum is £6.67 to £19.95 a month.
- **Scripted reading is blocked:** live /boards pages return a Cloudflare "Just a moment" 403 to scripts (tested today). Search engines still index the threads, e.g. Glamorgan census look-up threads 808739, 913765 and 1192784, and "Trying to find Williams" 451658.

## Verdict
- **Not a route for promotion.** Posting, replying and messaging need a paid Standard subscription, which breaks the zero-spend rule. Hot Matches needs an account and a member tree (no new accounts without the project lead's GO), and gives weak matches on a very common surname.
- **Free and allowed: read-only discovery through a search engine.** No account, no contact.

## How to do it (read-only, no account)
1. Once a quarter, run searches like these, reading the snippet and the cached page only:
   - `site:genesreunited.co.uk Llandough`
   - `site:genesreunited.co.uk Leckwith`
   - `site:genesreunited.co.uk "Great House" Glamorgan`
   - `site:genesreunited.co.uk Cogan Penarth Williams`
   - `site:genesreunited.co.uk Buckler Glamorgan`
2. Log each in-scope thread (thread id, board, year, place and surname asked about) in the project workspace Log place and surname only, never members' personal details.
3. Use the questions as **content signals**. If people ask about Llandough or Leckwith census entries, a Cedwyn page or e-book chapter answering that question is the asset. The board itself isn't the channel.
4. Never copy members' posts onto the site. Never contact a member.

## Proposal needing the project lead's GO (not done)
- **A paid Standard month (£4.95) to post one research-question thread on Find Ancestors.** Recommendation: **no**. It needs spend plus a new account, about 3 new threads a week on the board means few readers, and RootsChat (already covered, free) is the better forum.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Add Genes Reunited to the quarterly read-only lead sweep beside the RootsChat and Geni checks. Nothing to join, post or pay.
- If a sweep finds a live 2026 thread on Llandough, Leckwith or Great House, turn it into a Cedwyn FAQ or research-page entry (our own words, internal links only, banned public words apply). Note the thread id in the leads file, not on the site.
- Kill rule: two quarterly sweeps with no in-scope 2025-26 thread means we drop it.
