# Free editorial reviews for an indie non-fiction e-book: Readers' Favorite yes, Midwest Book Review print-only, paid services no

Harvested 2026-10-31 (skills harvest). Checked first: 'readers favorite', 'booklife', 'kirkus', 'midwest book review', 'indies today', 'online book club', 'book review service' all 0 hits in INDEX.md / skill files. Related but different: librarything-early-reviewers-member-giveaways.md (reader copies), goodreads giveaways, reedsy discovery, online-press-kit page.

## What the primary sources say (read 31 Oct 2026 unless marked)
- **Readers' Favorite (RF), free tier** (readersfavorite.com, read): reviews "published or unpublished book, manuscript, eBook, audio book"; "hundreds and even thousands of free reviews each month"; 1,500+ reviewers who *choose* books from a genre list (RF does not assign). "Although we cannot guarantee that all books will receive a review, more than half of the books submitted for a free review will receive one within three (3) months. Some books are reviewed in less than a week while others are never selected." Free features listed: review page, listing in the RF app, review "posted to popular websites and search engines", "announced to 500k libraries, bookstores, schools", Review Exchange, Book Donation programme.
- **RF posts only 4- and 5-star reviews** (same page, search snippet): "If an author receives a poor review, we provide private constructive criticism to the author instead." So the downside of submitting is a private critique, not a public bad review.
- **RF paid tier**: "Express Reviews start at just $59" (snippet of the same page) with 1/3/5-review bundles. **Never-pay rule: not for us.** Reject the upsells and contest entry fees.
- **Practitioner testimony** (snippets, threads not opened, Reddit blocked from the box): r/selfpublish Jul 2025 "Of the 16 reviews I've gotten, 13 have been 5 star and the other three have been 4 star. Some of my books have been on there a very long time" (= free queue can be slow/never); kboards: "Minimum 4-star, hence their excellent [ratings]"; Goodreads thread: "a single, free review (tho they also have pay-for options)". Sentiment: the review is a usable *editorial quote*, not a sales engine. No source with sales numbers found -> treat any sales effect as unknown.
- **Kirkus Indie / BookLife-style paid reviews**: author pays ~US$400-550 (Facebook group snippet). Rejected.
- **OnlineBookClub.org**: reader-side posts say reviewing is free for readers; the author-side programme terms were not read -> not checked, do not rely on it.

## How to do it (zero spend)
1. Submit the finished e-book (EPUB/PDF) to RF's **free** form only: correct genre (Non-Fiction > History / Biography / Travel - pick the narrowest true one), a 150-200-word blurb written as a hook (reviewers browse a list like a bookshop shelf: title, cover, first line of blurb decide pick-up).
2. Expect 0-3 months; set a calendar check at +90 days. If not picked by then, it may never be: do not pay for Express.
3. If a 4-5-star review lands: quote one sentence (with "Readers' Favorite" credit and star count) on the /ebooks/ card, the e-book's editorial-review section where the store allows it, and the press kit. Quote verbatim; do not trim into a stronger claim.
4. If a private critique arrives instead: log it as free editorial feedback; fix the cheapest issue in the next version (v0.0.x).
5. Do **not** enter the RF contest or buy stickers (fees). Do not swap reviews in ways a store forbids: use the Review Exchange only if its terms say reviews are honest and not conditional (read the terms before use; not checked here).
6. MBR: revisit only if a print edition is ever made; then send two copies + press release free.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Candidate: the £4.99 v0.0.2 e-book (non-fiction, Welsh local/estate history). One free RF submission, owner GO (it is a form submitted in the project's name; RF account needed - root rule today: open no new accounts, so this is a PROPOSAL for the queue, not an action).
- The reviewer reads the book: confirm the text keeps the public editorial rules (no banned words, no named private individuals) before submitting, because the review will quote it.
- Measure: whether a review arrives within 90 days; /ebooks/ conversion before/after adding the quote (Cloudflare + Stripe counts, honest small numbers).
- Kill rule: no review by +120 days -> drop, nothing else to do.
