Eisteddfod del Chubut 2027: literature and translation entries (pseudonym contest, not a promo slot)
Harvested 2026-10-31. What was read is marked (read); snippets only are marked (snippet).
What it is
- Eisteddfod del Chubut / Eisteddfod y Wladfa: the adult festival in October at the Salón San David, Trelew (San Martín 90). The youth Eisteddfod is in Gaiman in September. Smaller ones run in Trevelin, Dolavon and Puerto Madryn. Competitions are in Welsh and Spanish (es.wikipedia, read). Wikipedia states that "local, national and foreign" competitors take part each year (read; this is the encyclopedia's line, not the organisers' rules).
- Categories: literature in Welsh, literature in Spanish, translations (Spanish, Welsh and English per Wikipedia), music, recitation, dance, crafts, visual arts, photography, cooking (El Chubut 4 Sep 2024, read).
- Literature is judged anonymously under a pseudonym. 2026 Chair (Sillón Bárdico, best Welsh poem): Lois Medi William, a Wales-born teacher living in the Chubut valley, pseudonym "Gaia", poem "Y Tymhorau", awarded Sat 24 Oct 2026 (Diario Jornada 24 Oct 2026, read).
Dates (the pattern from three years, read)
| Year | Festival | Literature entries |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | week ending 20 Oct | Welsh 2-6 Sep; Spanish + translations 9-13 Sep |
| 2025 | 13-19 Oct | Welsh 25-29 Aug; Spanish + translations 1-5 Sep |
| 2026 | 19-25 Oct | (2026 call not read) |
| - The rules and set texts ("programa de bases, condiciones y competencias") were already downloadable by 25 Jul 2025 (El Valle Online, read). So expect the 2027 programme around June-July 2027, with literature entries closing in the last week of August or the first week of September 2027. | ||
| - Where it is published: the association's Facebook page "Eisteddfod del Chubut" (facebook.com). Contact: [address kept in the project workspace] Secretaría: San Martín 90, Trelew, Mon/Wed/Thu/Fri 17-19h; tel [number kept in the project workspace] (El Chubut 2024; El Valle Online 2025, read). |
Not checked (do not assume)
- The 2027 set themes, word limits, prizes, and whether the translation categories set fixed passages (likely, but the bases were not read).
- Whether entries from abroad can be sent by email or must arrive by post or by hand. Ask the association before preparing anything.
- Previously published work is almost certainly excluded. Eisteddfod rules normally ask for unpublished work, but this was not read for Chubut.
Not a route for us
- National Eisteddfod of Wales (2026, competition 722, Cystadleuaeth Y Wladfa): only for people who have lived in Y Wladfa all their lives and still live in Argentina. Prize £200; the 2026 theme was "Dathlu 160 mlynedd Y Wladfa" (eisteddfod.cymru, read).
How to do it
- In June 2027, read the programme on the association's Facebook page and save the PDF.
- Pick a category that fits: a Spanish prose piece on the set theme, or a translation category (Welsh to Spanish, or English to Spanish).
- Write new work to the set brief. A pseudonymous entry cannot advertise a book: no title, no URL, no author name.
- Meet the window and the delivery route exactly. Ask the secretaría whether an overseas entry may come by email or through an agent in Trelew.
- Prize-winning work is often read or published locally. Afterwards the author can be named in a press note ("ganador/a de ... en el Eisteddfod del Chubut 2027"). That is the only promotional value, and it comes after the result.
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Treat the Eisteddfod as credibility, not a sales channel. A placed or winning entry gives a line we can use in Spanish outreach to Chubut libraries and fairs, which already have their own skills.
- The Eisteddfod skill files we already have (welsh-patagonian-societies-chubut-outreach.md) say to avoid festival weeks for outreach. That still applies: do not pitch the e-book 19-25 Oct or in the entry weeks.
- Entering is an outward act made in someone's name. It is a PROPOSAL for the project lead's GO: who enters, under what pseudonym, and in which category. Human Welsh/Spanish quality is needed; Helo Blod can check Welsh copy (helo-blod-free-welsh-translation-trilingual-copy.md). A machine translation would not survive judges.
- Date to diarise: 2027-06-15, check that the programme is out. 2027-08-20, last date to have the entry final.
- Public text follows the editorial rules: never name the project lead, no banned words, nothing about family holdings.
