DNA surname projects as a cousin-finding route (FamilyTreeDNA Williams / Glamorgan / Wales / Buckler) — GATE
Date: 2026-10-31 · Status: GATE (person-owned decision; zero spend; no account opened)
What it is
FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) hosts volunteer-run "group projects" (surname, geographic, haplogroup). Over 10,000 surname projects exist (FTDNA video, search preview). Each project has public pages (About, DNA Results, Activity Feed, Links). Members are people who tested and joined. For a heritage site, the value is not selling DNA tests; it is (a) finding living cousins of a named family line, (b) reading public results that group a line by place of origin, and (c) being findable when a cousin searches the surname.
Live facts read today (FTDNA pages fetched 31 Oct 2026)
- Williams DNA Project (familytreedna.com): 2,660 members, two admins and a co-admin, project statistics last updated 20 Nov 2022. To join you give (1) the tested surname, (2) the oldest known paternal and maternal ancestor with dates and place, (3) permission to publish results and those ancestor names. Y-DNA results are viewable inside the project. A General Fund (US$726.65 on the day) pays toward Y37 tests for applicants who cannot afford one and who give a detailed paternal pedigree; shipping is not covered and the order is placed by the admin.
- Buckler group project: 1 member. It is effectively empty.
- Geographic projects (pages read): Wales Cymru DNA (Y-DNA and mtDNA only) 879 members; Glamorgan Wales Cousins (a sub-project of the St John Genealogy and DNA Project) 596 members. Their joining rules were not read line by line this run.
- FTDNA ran an "Early Bird Sale" banner to 11 Nov 2026. Tests cost money, so this route sits under the never-pay rule.
- Practitioner note (Roberta Estes, DNAeXplained, 13 Aug 2026, read): FTDNA retired its paid autosomal "unlock" for uploaded files on 18 Aug 2026. Uploads from other companies stay possible; exact free features after the change were not checked line by line.
Why surname projects are hard for Williams (practitioner reasoning)
- Welsh patronymic naming fixed surnames late (often 17th–19th c. in Glamorgan). Many unrelated "Williams" lines share the name, so a Williams Y-DNA match only means something when a paper pedigree and a place agree. The Guild of One-Name Studies was already skipped for the same reason ("Williams too common").
- Y-DNA follows the direct male line only. A line that passed through daughters (common in gentry successions, e.g. heiress marriages) will not show in Y-DNA. Autosomal matches fade after about 5–6 generations.
- So the useful unit is a sub-group inside a big project (e.g. "Williams of Glamorgan" within the Williams project, or the Glamorgan geographic project), not the surname.
How to use it (zero spend, no outreach)
- Read only. Check the public DNA Results tables of the Williams, Wales Cymru and Glamorgan projects for any lineage whose oldest ancestor sits in Llandough, Leckwith, Cogan, Penarth or Cardiff (search the results page for those place names; FTDNA's own tip is to set the page size to 3000 so in-page search works). Record hits as leads in the book/cousin notes. A surname in a results table is a lead, not a status finding.
- Make the site findable to project members. Project members search the web for their oldest ancestor's name and parish. Our cousin-bait ancestor pages (skill: cousin-bait-ancestor-pages-52-ancestors-pedigree-notes.md) should carry the exact name forms, dates and parish names a results table would show (e.g. "John Williams, d. 1908, Llandough juxta Penarth"). This is the zero-cost half of the route.
- Never apply to a General Fund on anyone's behalf; it is charity money for people who cannot afford tests.
Privacy and editorial rules
- Living people's DNA matches are personal data. Nothing from a match list goes on the public site. Only dead ancestors' names and places from public results may be cited, and only as leads.
- No family holdings or addresses on public pages. No insignia.
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Add one line to the book flywheel and online gap finder notes: "FTDNA project results tables (Williams, Wales Cymru, Glamorgan): read-only place-name check for Llandough/Leckwith/Cogan lines; leads only."
- On the next cousin-bait page edit, include the parish forms a DNA project table would print (Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Leckwith/Lecwydd) so a project member searching the web lands on Cedwyn.
- Kill rule: if two read-only checks (this run + one in 3 months) find no lineage tied to these parishes, drop the route.
