County-history citation route: Victoria County History has no Welsh volumes; Glamorgan's equivalent is the closed Glamorgan County History (gate)
Skill harvested 2026-10-31 (17:45Z) from the root's seed (4). Checked absent first: 'victoria county' 0 and 'glamorgan county history' 0 in INDEX.md and root-skip-additions.txt.
What exists (read today)
- Victoria County History (VCH): founded 1899 "to produce a history of every parish in England" (IHR page, search snippet; the live page shows a bot check). It covers England only. There is no Welsh VCH and no open VCH volunteer route for Glamorgan.
- The Glamorgan equivalent is the Glamorgan County History, six volumes (Wikipedia "Bibliography of the Vale of Glamorgan", wikitext read; Internet Archive metadata read):
- I, Natural History (1936)
- II, Early Glamorgan (1984)
- III, The Middle Ages (1971, ed. T. B. Pugh, University of Wales Press)
- IV, Early Modern Glamorgan from the Act of Union to the Industrial Revolution (Wikipedia gives 1936/Rees, but the series order suggests 1974; the title page is not checked)
- V, Industrial Glamorgan 1700-1970 (1980, A. H. John and Glanmor Williams)
- VI, Glamorgan Society 1780-1980 (1988)
- Publishers: the Glamorgan County History Committee/Trust with the University of Wales Press.
- The series is finished. No new volumes are being written, so there is no contribution or correction route of the kind a live VCH county offers.
- Copies:
- Internet Archive holds Vol III (bwb_KR-502-255), Vol V (glamorgancountyh0000arth) and a 1936 volume (glamorgancountyh0006unse). All three are controlled lending ("access-restricted-item: true"), so reading them needs a free archive.org login.
- Searching inside them returned nothing without a login.
- Vols IV and VI have Google Books records (snippet view at most).
Why it still matters for marketing (credibility, not traffic)
- A county history is the reference that librarians, reviewers, Wikipedia editors and AI answers check first. Exact volume-and-page citations to it on our chronology pages make our pages read as sourced.
- Vol III (medieval manors and lordships) and Vol IV (Tudor-to-Georgian gentry and estates) are the volumes most likely to mention Llandough, Leckwith, Cogan and the Herbert/Lewis/Windsor holdings. That is our inference; nothing has been read in them yet.
- It also feeds the book flywheel: the controlled-lending copies can be searched once a login exists.
How to do it
- Do not open a new account (zero new accounts rule). Add "borrow Glamorgan County History III, IV and V on Internet Archive" to the GO list. It needs a free archive.org login, which only the project owner can decide on.
- Until then, cite the series only at series and volume level where our pages already rely on it. Never quote a page we have not read.
- If a library route opens, take page references for Llandough, Leckwith and Cogan, add each as a book-flywheel row (question tag: tenure direction / standing) and as a "Sources" line on the matching chronology page.
- For a live, open county-history-style route in Wales, the existing skills are Morgannwg / the Glamorgan History Society (see glamorgan-history-society-day-school-bookstall-morgannwg-clark-award.md) and the Dictionary of Welsh Biography (see dictionary-welsh-biography-citation-correction-route-gate.md).
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Status: GATE. No outreach. Credibility work only, inside our own pages.
- One action now, no contact needed: list the six volumes with full bibliographic lines in the research section's bibliography, marked "not yet read", so readers and crawlers see the standard reference named.
- Rules: banned public words apply; do not cite Vol IV's year until the title page is checked; never present a county-history line as support beyond its exact words.
- Kill test: if Vols III and IV, once read, carry no Llandough/Leckwith/Cogan lines, drop it to a bibliography entry only.
