What it is (read today)
The British Association for Local History (BALH) is the national charity for local history in Great Britain. Three of its doors cost nothing and need no membership:
- Ten-Minute Talks (balh.org.uk, read in full). "Record a presentation of about 10 minutes... using PowerPoint, or any other method you prefer. Send us the finished video." BALH publishes it on its YouTube channel and the Ten-Minute Talks page. Its Digital Team offers help with preparing and recording. Contact: [address kept in the project workspace] (subject "Ten-Minute Talk Enquiry"). A Facebook post from BALH (snippet): "We're always looking for new stories of local history research!"
- BALH blog guest posts. Recent posts are by outside researchers (Ben Robinson, 30 Oct 2026; Tom Trafford, 12 Oct 2026, read on the awards page). The guidelines page ("Would you like to contribute to the BALH Blog?", 2020) showed a bot check; only its search snippet was seen: "Choose a topic relating to local history". Not checked in full.
- Annual awards (balh.org.uk, read in full): - Research and publication certificates go to "a published article presenting sound original research", which "must appear in a journal, newsletter or similar publication produced by a local voluntary body" and be sent to the Reviews Editor (Dr Heather Falvey, postal address on the page). Everything sent to her is considered automatically. We are not a voluntary body, so a self-published e-book does not qualify. An article printed in a society journal or newsletter would. - Newsletter award: for a society's own members' newsletter. Not us. - Outstanding Individual Contributions: anyone may nominate, with two 300-500-word references, between 1 July and 31 December. Up to six a year. Not a self-promotion route.
Real numbers (BALH YouTube channel, read with yt-dlp today, last 30 uploads)
- Ten-Minute Talks get 36 to 938 views each. Most fall between 150 and 650. The top one was Kinmont Willie Armstrong (938). Property-records talks do well: "The Chancery Suits of the Legg Family on the Isle of Wight, 1669" has 651 and "Chancery Records" has 455.
- The newest three (Jan 2026 onward) have 36-43 views each, so views build slowly over months.
- In short: a few hundred engaged local historians per talk. It brings credibility and a backlink, not volume. There are no sales figures; we would measure our own.
How to do it (once a GO is given)
- Pick one tight, record-led story that stands on its own in 10 minutes, e.g. "What the 1841 tithe apportionment shows at Great House, Llandough". Use one record per slide and the source line on screen.
- Build 8-10 slides in the site's dark style and record a voiceover in PowerPoint (BALH's own guide: balh.org.uk). Keep it under 11 minutes. Print the notes, as BALH asks.
- End slide: one line plus the site URL (cedwyn.bucklerfamily.estate/learn/ or /research/), and no sales pitch. BALH is a charity audience.
- Email the Digital Team with a 3-line pitch and the file link, as a HubSpot draft for review. Nothing is sent without a GO.
- Alongside it, offer a 600-900-word blog post on the same record, or keep it for later. Read the guidelines page in full first (open it in a browser; requests hit a bot check).
- For the article certificate: when a society journal (Morgannwg, a Glamorgan FHS journal, a Penarth society newsletter) prints one of our articles, ask its editor to send the issue to the BALH Reviews Editor. It is then considered automatically.
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Fit: strong. A Chancery- and deed-led property story is the kind of talk that already does best on the channel (455-651 views).
- Rules:
- Public text never names the family member who runs the project.
- Banned words apply (states, assertions, per, second-hand report, not checked, reported, deception, taken); use "not checked".
- No accusations about named people, no insignia, nothing about family holdings or addresses.
- Present the record and the open question, not the case.
- Asset reuse: the movie stills and the tithe story map can supply the slides. The same video can go on our own YouTube as a Short series cut, after BALH publishes.
- Measure: BALH video views at 30 and 90 days, plus referral visits from youtube.com and balh.org.uk in Cloudflare.
- Kill test: if the first talk has fewer than 100 views and no referral visits after 90 days, do not make a second.
- Status: gate. Contact no one until the GO; draft the pitch in HubSpot only.
